Moisture makes bathrooms a welcome mat for unsightly (and unseen) developments.
Color-code your sponges/cloths: one colour for sink and bathtub, another for toilet. And reserve these sponges for bathroom use only.
To discourage mildew growth, increase the amount of air circulation and light. Use fans during showers and for about 30 minutes after. And if the space has a window, be sure to open it whenever possible!
Wipe shower walls with a squeegee after each use, and pull the shower curtain closed so water can’t sit in the folds. If you have a tile and grout surround, keep a bottle of castile soap along with a plastic scrub brush hanging from the shower rod and quickly scrub down the walls after each shower (or at least twice a week!)
Spread towels over two hooks to dry, or hang them on rods.
Routine Bathroom Cleaning Tasks
TOILET
Skip the harsh chemicals and pour 1/2 cup vinegar (a natural disinfectant) into the toilet bowl. Let it sit for several minutes. Brush interior of bowl with a toilet brush, then flush. If the toilet has a hard water ring, let the vinegar sit for an hour, then brush clean. Spray the outside of the toilet (working from top to bottom always) with a solution of equal parts vinegar and distilled water, wiping with a soft cloth.
SINK & TUB
Clean inside basins with baking soda paste and a soft sponge. Never use a harsh bristle brush, as this can damage the surface.
To tackle soap scum, use an acidic cleaner like vinegar. Just be sure to rinse very well, as acidic residue can etch surfaces if left on.
Wipe faucets, handles and other hardware with a soft cloth and vinegar.
MIRRORS & GLASS
Clean mirrors and other glass items like shower doors, cabinet fronts or glass shelves with a cloth dampened with a solution of equal part vinegar and distilled water. Wipe dry.
Tip! Using distilled water will ensure streak free surfaces.
ACCESSORIES
Soap dishes can be washed in hot water in the sink - before cleaning the sink itself - or gently wiped down if mounted on the wall. Sanitize toothbrush cup holders in the dishwasher, or simply use your DIY solution of vinegar and hot water.
How To Clean Bathrooms: Spring Cleaning Tasks
GROUT
Scrub grout lines with a soft-bristled brush (an old toothbrush works great) and a baking soda paste, being careful not to scratch delicate tiles. To treat mildew buildup, spray the area with undiluted vinegar, let sit for 10 minutes, then brush and rinse.
SHOWERHEAD
Submerge still-attached showerhead in a plastic bag filled with vinegar, securing with a rubber band. Let it soak overnight. Wipe down the next morning.
FAN VENT
Remove the fan vent cover and wash in warm, soapy water, scrubbing with a soft brush. Let the cover dry fully before replacing.
